TEDxYouth Day Q: What can you share with the world?

Sarah & Tedwina

Our first TEDxYouth@Adelaide event was held at the RiAus on Saturday 19th November. And what a day!

Our program was selected to showcase the best of TEDxAdelaide in 2010 and 2011, plus TED, TEDGlobal and TEDx around the world. Combined with our live speakers: Mike Worsman and Chris Campbell, Daniel Spencer and Rachel Chapman and Liz Rhodes, the day ended up being a powerful reflection on the importance of finding your own story and acting to change the world.

There was plenty of discussion during the breaks, but our volunteers also took the time to ask our audience the TEDxYouthDay Question: What can you share with the world?”. We covered big issues in these conversations including asylum seekers, domestic violence, global poverty, climate action and taking risks. Here’s some of the responses we gathered about what young people at TEDxYouth@Adelaide would like to see, would like to share and can share with the rest of the world.

Brodie: I want to see a fair treatment in religious crisis. All people pressured by religious tendencies need our help to be empowered and they deserve a chance to be their own individual.

Bella (13):  I would like to see an exchange program in schools with third world countries. I want us to see and live through what they live through every day. We need to see the difference and be aware.

Jo-Anne: I would like to cut waste in my home country of Singapore.  I am inspired by the amount of people who recycle in Australia. Singapore is as big as 1/8 Kangaroo Island, with high rise buildings but no government plan for recycling. 85% of houses are owned by government so I would like to propose a scheme to introduce recycling. It can be as easy as putting a recycling bin into the lobby.

Petra: I got inspired by Dan’s talk about renewable energy. I believe it’s just a piece of the puzzle. We need to realise that the stuff we have at home take resources to produce. I would like to see people realising that they don’t need that much stuff. We can be smart and reuse what other people don’t want, reduce our consumption.

Steve: What if you could go to anywhere ins the world and support yourself and be able to help those locals out of poverty and exploitation with micro or collective enterprises?”

Dina: Don’t live to life to please others. It is YOUR life. Worthwhile is what you make of it, not what others say. Sometimes it’s OK to be selfish. Take risks!

Sandy: Feel your passion with every cell – let it grow and expand. Then share it!

Noriko: To use your voice, speak up – out and loudly.

Kate: Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Thank you for adding your voices to the ones all around the world this weekend, seeking out what we can share.
